Wordy Wednesday

Wednesday are busy days.  But today is vacation.  I am currently enjoying the sunshine and warm weather that Las Vegas has to offer.  B-e-a-utiful.  A wonderful change from the drab winter I left behind in Minne-snow-ta.

So today's quotes are all about vacation!

A vacation is what you take when you can no longer take what you've been taking.
 ~Earl Wilson

Too much work, and no vacation,
Deserves at least a small libation.
So hail! my friends, and raise your glasses,
Work's the curse of the drinking classes.
~Oscar Wilde

Happy Wednesday!

Book Review: The Mountains Bow Down

"With the trajectory of launched missiles, the mountains soared from the ocean. Smothered with evergreens, the steeps pointed to a sky so blue it whispered of eternity." It's not often that the first two sentences in a book draw me in the way that Sibella Giorello was able to in The Mountains Bow Down. The imagery immediately draws you in, feeling as though you are on the Alaskan Cruise with FBI Special Agent Raleigh Harmon.

As an FBI Agent, Raleigh is, of course, drawn into the investigation when a high profile murder takes place on her cruise. She requests assistance from the FBI. Enter Special Agent Jack Stephanson. As the two work to solve the case, Raleigh also must provide consultation on a movie that is being filmed onboard, her family, and her changing attitude towards Jack.

Before beginning I was nervous about reading a book that is not the first in a series.  However, I didn't feel like I was missing anything crucial to the story that wasn't addressed in this book. I really enjoyed the story and thought it had a good mix of suspense, action, comedic relief, with a little romantic tension thrown in for good measure.

The Mountains Bow Down by Sibella Giorello is one that I would recommend to someone looking for an interesting book that pays as much attention to characters as it does to the storyline.

I was graciously provided with a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes by the publisher.

Dear Winter

Dear Winter:
Did you not get my message?  You were officially over a few days ago.  I tried to break it off gently.  I tried to ease you into it.  I put away the winter jacket in favor of my fleece zip up jacket.  I started to wear brighter colors, not just the dark ones that many wear when you're around.  I even put away my boots.  But no, you still didn't get the message.

It's not like you didn't know this was coming.  It's been a long time since I wanted you here.  You're cold, and dark, and a mess.  You make my car messy, roads slippery, and travel a hassle.

So take a hint.  I'm ready for spring.  It's spring break at 2:20 today.  I want sunshine.  Clear, blue skies.  Warmth.  Wildlife.  Green grass.  And those are things that you just can't give me.

So get the message Winter, take a hike.  Now.

Sincerely,

Wordy Wednesday

Wednesday are busy days.  Man oh man are they ever.  So here at The Sunset Won't I share a quote or short passage that I like with you.  Something that takes only a minute of your day.

Here is a quote that I have repeatedly used over the last couple days with my students at school:

Cheaters never win.  Winners never cheat.

I think it's pretty applicable to many parts of our lives. Happy Wednesday!

Guest Blogger, Katie from Simply Kate!

Greetings readers!  Today we have a guest blogger, Katie from Simply Kate.  I encourage you to check it out.  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Hello there readers of The Sunset Won’t! I’m Katie from Simply Kate!

My blog is, like the title suggests, simply about me. I write about my life, my impressions, my ideas, thoughts, and quirks. My mind bounces from one point to another, always wanting to try this thing or that. My blog is very much the same way. So while my life is hopping from day to day, my blog is following along excitedly!

I was exercising a few months ago when something changed my life. I was doing a fat burning kick-boxing workout from a Jillian Michael’s workout DVD, when she said something about the workout that changed the way I was feeling about my life.

If you don’t get uncomfortable, nothing is going to change.”
She’s talking about pushing yourself harder in your workout to get the biggest results. But it hit a chord in my brain when I realized that it was so easily transferred to the rest of life.
My brain took a step back and looked at all the aspects of my life. I was still living in my parent’s basement with no job, and no foreseeable future. I was unhappy. I was comfortable.
By the next week, plans were in motion. I was moving to Las Vegas; a city about as different from the small town I had grown up in as a bird is different from an airplane.

It was definitely not a comfortable feeling, knowing that everything was about to change. Each step into the unknown scared me more than the last. But something happened in this process that I had been looking for. I was happy. I was happier than I had been in a very long time.

I let myself get uncomfortable, and things changed for the better!
Things are far from perfect just because I moved to Vegas. I still don’t have a job, I don’t have any friends. But I’m happy knowing that if I get out there, however uncomfortable it may be, that’s going to change as well.

It has been one of the hardest things I have ever done. But when I think of the alternative - sitting miserably in my parent’s basement – I can’t help but think that it’s been so worth it.
I want to always be uncomfortable.

Lessons in the Pages

You are curled up on the most comfortable chair in your house.  You have a cup of your favorite beverage next to you, a lamp on, and a book in hand.  You get immersed in the story.  Each turn of the page sucks you into to the story a little bit farther.  The tension in your shoulders eases, the troubles in your mind take a back seat.  As the words unfold before you.

There is nothing better than a good book.  Strike that, there is nothing better than a good book that also teaches you a lesson, or serves you a reminder, or gives you a message that you sorely needed.  Nothing.

I read and reviewed a book this past weekend called Lilly's Wedding Quilt, a sweet Amish romance.  One that was a quick read for me.  But one of the best parts was that at the end of the book there was a group discussion guide.  It's not often that I take the time to look at the back of the book.  When the story is done, I close the cover and put it back on a shelf to be pulled out a read again another day.

But for some reason, on this day, I did flip the pages.  And what I found were some very thought provoking questions.  Eventually I will share them all, but for now, I will share just a few.

The question asked was: How does fear often keep Lilly (one of the main characters) from experiencing an abundant life?  What do you fear the most?

What do I fear the most?  Disappointing others?  Being irrelevant?  Not being the person God made me to be?  Not being able to live my dreams?  All big fears.  But that wasn't what struck me.  What struck me was the phrasing of the first question when I spun it back to myself.  How does fear keep me from experiencing an abundant life?

How often do I hide behind the mask of fear?  Wondering what could go wrong, how I could fail.  How often do I miss out on life.  But not just life.  ABUNDANT life.  A full and plentiful life.

How often does my fear paralyze me?  Keep me stuck in neutral, coasting along.  Not straying to far from the beaten path?

How often does my fear make me doubt?  Doubt myself?  Doubt others?  Doubt the friendships and relationships that I'm in?

How often does my fear make me feel unworthy?  Unworthy of more.

Well today, I work at taking off that mask, of moving out of the fear, of doubting less and trusting more, and believing in myself.  Today, I remember that we all deserve abundant life.

What do you fear most?

Book Review: Lilly's Wedding Quilt by Kelly Long

Lilly's Wedding Quilt by Kelly Long

Lilly's Wedding Quilt is the story of Lilly Lapp the local Amish school teacher and Jacob Wyse the handsome horse breeder from her community.  When an incident of chance brings them together, together they may need to stand to survive the afternoon.  Jacob is mending a broken heart.  Lilly isn't looking for love.  Jacob offers his hand in marriage to Lilly, while his heart belongs to another.  Lilly has a comforter's heart, taking care of her mother, the children of the community, and rises to help Jacob.  God works to bring this pair together in a way only he could.  But will they stay that way?

This book was amazing.  I couldn't put it down, and read it in one day.  It was a sweet romantic story that weaved in Amish culture respectfully.  The story was believable, characters well thought out, and the plot evolved at a wonderful pace.

It's not often I find a book that I enjoy so much.  Perhaps it's my Hutterite heritage that drew me to the book, but the wonderful messages within the book were what kept me reading.

I found myself repeatedly stopping and thinking of how God has worked in my life, where I need to step back and listen.

A wonderful group guide is included with thought-provoking questions.

I would definitely recommend this to someone looking for a sweet romance, well thought out characters and plot lines, and an inspiring message.

Booksneeze has graciously provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes.

Wordy Wednesday

Happy Wednesday.  A busy day.  It marks the middle of the week.  A symbol of all that has been done, and all that is left to do.

It it on Wednesdays that I share a quote, short passage or song lyric that I enjoy.  Something short, that takes only a minute of your busy day to enjoy.

Today's quotes are from TV shows:

Fate has a way of putting in front of us that which we most try to leave behind.
White Collar

Hate is a choice.  Don't do it.
One Tree Hill

It's nearly impossible.  Which means it's a little bit possible.
